In the past few months, I’ve really become interested in learning more about wine. Of course, I’m a wine lover, but only lately am I understanding and appreciating both red & white wine. Therefore I was delighted when earlier this month (June 7), I was invited to join a select few for an exclusive preview of the Campo Viejo Tapas Trail, a collaboration of wine and food in association with Deliveroo. The wine hails from Rioja, one of the supreme winemaking regions of Spain, where Campo Viejo create barrels and bottles of fruity, smooth wine. Using the most advanced techniques available, this allows for modern twists on traditional methods to help deliver progressive styles of Rioja wines to satisfy all palates. The venue was an architect’s private apartment on Camden Street, where the outdoor terrace garden was as impressive as the whole architecture & interior design – and I was just in awe.
Following the reception and introductory talks by winemaker Clara Canals, the afternoon was quite an exciting one as the winemakers of Campo Viejo treated us to a special wine tasting, titled the ‘Campo Viejo Colour Lab’. In the kitchen of this stunning apartment, atop a white marble top island were black glasses, each filled with one of the three wines by Campo Viejo Rioja; Reserva, Tempranillo & Viura-Tempranillo Blanco. What made this experience so unique was that we were to taste each wine in the different lights (white, red, green & blue), to see how our perception of light can influence the taste of the red & white wines, from changing intensity to being more fruity or fresher. Sommelier Federico Lleonart also encouraged us to fill in the scorecards to mark in how each light did alter our taste of each wine; and I found that the red light definitely made the most notable difference. The Reserva and Tempranillo wines seemingly became more fruity and slightly more intense, whereas the Viura-Tempranillo Blanco was fresher in the green light. It was definitely a fun experience, and helped pick up more notes within the wines. The wines themselves were delicious; strong and full of flavour, with notes of grapes and berries, very smooth and not dry – and too easy to drink! As a white wine lover, I was surprised that actually I preferred the Tempranillo red wine more!
The Campo Viejo Tapas TrAil allows guests to immerse themselves in the expressive culture of Rioja through a food and wine experience brought to life through the bold and balanced Campo Viejo range of wines, specially created restaurant menus.
We were also treated to tasty tapas courtesy of Drury Buildings, delivered by the speedy Deliveroo, and dined in another gorgeous room of the aforementioned apartment. Our meal consisted of breads, cold meats & cheese to start, followed by the tapas; chicken wings, ham hock & cheese croquette and meatballs in sauce. The food was truly delicious and flavoursome, and alongside the wine, it felt very much as though we were dining in Spain.
