Event – Getting Fishy at the Fish Bar, Bray*

Yesterday evening (May 25) I was invited to the launch night for Bray’s newest seafood joint, Fish Bar. Curated and run by culinary comrades Colm & Shaman, it was a brilliant and super sunny evening in Bray, Co. Wicklow to celebrate this little fish stop & shop, next door to the town’s beloved The Harbour Bar. I’m a big lover of Irish seafood and although I work in town, I was very happy to trip out to Bray and discover the tasty treats the duo had in store. With outdoor picnic tables and four themed booths, this is a great spot to chill out with family & friends that’s pet-friendly – they even have two house cats who wander through (so cute!). Irish craft beer giant Wicklow Wolf Brewery was also on hand, with the bar serving up their latest summer brew, Born in Bray. I’m not a beer drinker, but I did have a taste (or two half pints of it), and it sure is a refreshing, strong drink that’s perfect for summer, and for seafood too.

With fresh fish delivered to our doors daily, Fish Bar proudly experiments with the finest seafood our shores have to offer. From blackened catch to sweet potato crab cakes, fresh oysters to prawn tacos, our menu is carefully crafted and selected with new specials added to the tiles daily.

The weather definitely had everyone out and in very happy spirits, smiles everywhere you turned. The Fish Bar is snug in the corner outside The Harbour Bar, with white tiled splashbacks, an open wood-fire oven, and plenty of wicked neon signs that really suit the feel and attitude of the duo’s fishy venture. For the launch, guests were treated to bite-sized tasters of their menu, which included the Smoked Salmon Flatbread, Crab Roll, Prawn Tacos and the Irish classic of Fish & Chips. Every dish I tasted had such fresh fish, full of flavour and the prawn and cod fillet in particularly were extremely succulent, with delicious batter. All of the accompaniments also complimented their fishy mains, especially the crab with that kick of Sriracha and the chargrilled pineapple salsa. The bread used for the nibbles was also very fresh, the tacos nice and light, the brioche and flatbread the right thickness and nothing was overly doughy or underbaked. I also had the chips, once for the classic Fish & Chips, and once with my Prawn Tacos main (which I did pay for). The chips are really ‘potatoey’ – without sounding too aloof, this is such a plus because it really tastes like Ireland! Chunky, hand cut chips with skins on, the Mexican spiced cheese fries were also very tasty and had the right amount of spice and cheese ratio.

Overall, the launch night was definitely successful, with long queues every now and then, and plenty of compliments for the fish, the portion sizes and the chips too. I thoroughly enjoyed my evening, the fish is truly sublime! I’m already looking forward to my next trip to the Fish Bar, and recommend you visit too!
