It feels like forever that I’ve written an album review, so major apologies! You may have noticed from the previous This Month’s Music posts that I’ve been listening to an artist called Grace a lot, a lot. This Australian beauty has become one of my favourite artists, having discovered her music through curiosity after hearing her hit single again while on shuffle, You Don’t Own Me featuring rapper G-Eazy.
Her debut album, FMA (2016), is amazing. It’s full of sass, emotional lyrics, brilliant vocals and really strong beats, and notes of funk, soul and R&B – and the title is an abbreviation of “Forgive My Attitude”. The opening track, Church On Sunday, is a very witty-written song. As the album’s initial first impression of the artist, I was hooked by that backtrack, but it’s her vocals that had me convinced. The lyrics are easily relatable to many of us 20-something year olds, with the story of having a crush but not wanting anything more. The album flows well from track to track, with that funky beat evident throughout the body of work. More hip hop influences show through on Crazy Over Here (feat. Parker) and the aforementioned You Don’t Own Me (feat. G-Eazy), which was also the main song for anti-superhero film Suicide Squad (2016). Grace showcases her wide range of vocals and her ability to hit those Christina Aguilera or Mariah Carey high notes often on many tracks, especially on Hell Of A Girl. I’m a sucker for the heartfelt songs and the emotional lyrics, which Grace easily succeeds with How To Love Me and Boyfriend Jeans, the latter a remixed version of the original track on her debut EP, Memo (2015). These have also become some of my most-played songs of 2017 so far! Milder slow-tempo songs of similar messages include Coffee, From You, New Orleans and the short outro of Song Cries And Amens, which is a beautiful ending to such a talented album.
Overall I am in love with this album, and hope to see Grace taking over on the radio and stage more. I highly recommend this if you’re open to new music, love a good soulful R&B album and appreciate real talent.
